  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Unlike with cataracts, AMD leads to vision loss that cannot be reversed by surgery.  Located at the center of the retina, the macula receives the clearest detail out of the image we see.  Smokers are 3x more predisposed than non-smokers to degeneration of the retina, and to experience it an average of 10 years sooner.

  • Retinopathy

By elevating the likeliness of developing diabetes as much as 40% over non-smokers, smokers in turn are more likely to suffer eye conditions that are caused by diabetes.  Retinopathy develops when uncontrolled blood sugar weakens blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the retina. Eventually, leaking blood vessels can fail to deliver a healthy supply of oxygen to the retina, impairing its function and causing vision loss.
