Everyone knows the basics of keeping skin safe in the sun: stay in the shade and wear sunscreen. Well, your eyes shouldn’t be ignored when protecting yourself. There are basic things that you can do on vacation without leaving your eye health at home.

Sunglasses: The good ones

Protecting your eyes from UV rays needs to be at the top of your priority list, especially when you plan on spending a lot of time soaking them up. The best, easiest, and the most stylish way to do that is with sunglasses. The most important part of this crucial article of clothing is the percent of UV protection. You want them to block 100% of the UV aimed at your precious peepers.

Dark tint and a big price tag do not make them everything you need them to be. Not having that high UV protection can make your eyes behave normally. This renders them even more vulnerable to UV rays.

Polarized lenses are really best as they not only block that pesky UV, they also block glare which can be a hindrance to a good time. Glare bounces off of pretty much everything and polarized lenses block light from different angles. If you aren’t sure if your lenses are polarized, tilt them to the side next to a source of light. If the light changes in appearance, they are indeed polarized.


You have a pair of 100% UV blocking, polarized sunglasses now, right? Good. Now it’s time to protect your eyes underwater. Goggles protect your eyes against chemicals and bacteria in the water. You don’t want any of that in your eyes causing infection. When looking for goggles, choose a well-fitted pair that seals off your eyes from water. Removing contacts before diving in is important regardless of how well the goggles fit though!

Eat for Your Eye Health

Sunglasses and goggles shield your eyes from the outside, but the right foods can strengthen them from within. Incorporating some of these foods into your diet can have huge benefits. Bonus: many are portable enough for carrying as snacks.

  • Nuts- Cashews, brazil nuts, almonds, and walnuts are packed with Vitamin E. This essential vitamin protects your eyes from damage.
  • Citrus fruits- Grapefruit, lemon, and oranges are high in an antioxidant much the same as Vitamin E. You’ve heard of Vitamin C, yes? Citrus already makes summertime seem brighter, eat it up!
  • Eggs- Lutein can reduce the chances of sight loss and is found in eggs. They are also high in Zinc, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C. They are super portable in their hard-boiled form.
  • Sweet Potatoes and Carrots- These root vegetables are both high in beta-carotene. It grants them an orange color and you the healthy eyes to see them with.

Go Prepared

For long trips, take extra precautions like contacts and eye drops. If you have an emergency pair of eyeglasses that haven’t been updated in a while, check in with your eye doctor to make sure you have the right prescription. You don’t want to miss out on the beautiful sights because you weren’t prepared.
